The joy of a Jospel service at CRJ

Cantor Lisa Levine

The Congregation of Reform Judaism will host Seeds of Community with Cantor Lisa Levine at the Congregation, 928 Malone Dr., Orlando, on Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015.

CRJ invites the entire community to join them for a weekend of song and celebration; of spiritual uplift and warmth of community. The Friday night service will begin at 7 p.m. and is called a Jospel service, which is the combination of the Jewish and gospel styles of music. The Jewish Gospel Experience is a result of Cantor Levine's work with Interfaith, African music and Jewish choir music that inspired Levine to create music which melds these styles for use in Jewish and Christian worship settings.

Cantor Levine will be joined on the Bima by Cantor Jacqueline Rawiszer, and the CRJ adult choir, Shirim Ensemble, Kol Tikvah Youth Choir, and the Shir Joy Teen Ensemble. They will also be joined by the Youth Choir of the First Congregational Church of Winter Park, Kathy Slage, director.

On Shabbat morning, the service will be a Yoga Shalom Shacharit service where people can engage in morning prayers that will open their hearts and renew their spirits with the nationally acclaimed Yoga Shalom created by Cantor Levine. People of all physical abilities are encouraged to participate while seated in a chair. A drumming circle will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Yoga

Shalom at 10 a.m. There is a $10 program cost.

Saturday evening there will be a special concert titled My Songs for the Jews of Cuba. This special concert, which will follow Havdalah, reflects Cantor Levine's experience being the first woman cantor to perform in Cuba. She will share her experience with insightful narration and slides. The rich and varied program features Ladino and Yiddish folk songs, cantorial gems, and ends with favorite Hebrew melodies. Tickets are $18 for regular admission, and $10 for seniors and students.
