Congregation Sinai, located at 303 A North Highway 27 in Minneola, has been very busy this summer. A new progressive service for Rosh Hashanah is planned for the second day. This service is open to the community and will last approximately one hour. It will be followed by brunch and study of the story of Rosh Hashanah. A new board has been elected with Peter Sobel as president, Sheila Goldman as vice president, Debbie Harris as treasurer, Deb Schumacher as recording secretary, and Walter Friedman as corresponding secretary.

Also, newly elected are Karen Miller, chairman of Ritual; Gwen Levy as chairman of Education; Basha Schlazer as board director, along with Robert Miller, Alan Harris and Steven Silpe.

The board is busy making plans for the beginning of Religious School, new bar and bat mitzvah students, the High Holidays (which will begin the beginning of October this year), and many more new activities.

Congregation Sinai has services every Friday night at 7:30. The first and third Fridays are creative services with very interesting themes and music. A tropical island Sabbath was held in July with Carribbean melodies for the prayers. August will feature a picnic in air-conditioned “Sinai Park” with creative music to match. Every Saturday morning a very short service is conducted with study of the weekly Torah portion and Bagels and Bible, free to all who wish to join in.

Sunday is Religious School. Tuition is free for children and grandchildren of members of Congregation Sinai. Twenty-one adults and nine children have been called to the Torah as bar/bat miztvah in the past four years. Three more will be called in 2017.

In addition, Congregation Sinai celebrates all traditional and religious holidays, has many Shabbat dinners and celebrations. An adult education class meets on Tuesdays to study the books of the Old Testament.

A very active Sisterhood raises funds for many organizations, supports the food pantries in two elementary schools, collects old cell phones for Battered Women, and has a Book Club, which meets once a month. In addition, a successful Fashion Show and a Card party takes place.

The Men’s Club holds a golf tournament each year along with a Holocaust Yellow Candle project.
