Federation's 'Summer of Love'

Fifty years after the original "Summer of Love" ushered in a counterculture revolution in America, the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando is launching its own Summer of Love, though with a very different goal.

Marking the final weeks of Federation's 2017 Annual Campaign, the Summer of Love launch on June 19 will kick off a full season of special programs and events for members of the Greater Orlando Jewish community. The kickoff week will be a busy one as Federation staff and volunteers show their appreciation to the people who are the lifeblood of the local Jewish community while encouraging others to "share the love." Among the Summer of Love events planned:

• Mitzvah Monday (June 19): Federation staff will say "thank you" to local Jewish agencies with an early-morning delivery of sweet treats to their offices.

• That same evening, Federation's Cardozo Legal Society will throw a Happy Hour mixer for legal professionals at Winter Park's Bear and Peacock Brewstillery.

• On Tuesday, June 20, Federation staff will distribute refreshing snacks for visitors to the Maitland Jewish Community Campus.

• A Virtual Lemonade Stand online fundraiser will be going on throughout the week. Supporters can buy a virtual glass of lemonade and receive a "sweet" lemonade badge to display on social media.

• On Wednesday, June 21, Federation Board members and volunteers will take part in the first "Phone a Friend Challenge," a new twist on the traditional Super Sunday phone-a-thon.

• On Thursday, June 22, Our Jewish Orlando, Federation's young adult division, will have a Community Mitzvah Lake Cleanup at Paddleboard Orlando (Lake Killarney), followed by a special Torah on Tap.

• Summer of Love launch week concludes Sunday morning, June 25, with the PJ Library Orlando/Shalom Families Tikkun Olam Park Cleanup Day at Fort Mellon Park in Sanford.

Federation's leadership will continue to "share the love" in July, but on the other side of the world. President Rhonda Forest, Board member Larry Haber and Executive Director Olga Yorish will represent Orlando during the Jewish Federations of North America's leadership mission to the Ukraine and Israel.

The Summer of Love officially winds down on Sunday, Aug. 27, with Federation's 2017 Annual Meeting. Of course, the meeting will have a special Summer of Love twist.
