On Wednesday, Aug. 20, the students from the Jewish Academy of Orlando had the opportunity to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in a big way. Each student brought his or her own bucket and, grade by grade, had the opportunity to pour ice-cold water on Head of School Alan Rusonik. In addition to participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge, the students used the day to learn about the disease and a fundraising opportunity, as education and tzedakah are part of the school's core values.

From all angles, Rusonik got buckets of ice water poured on him.

In terms of tzedakah, the students raised over $300 for ALS in 24 hours. Educationally, the students learned that ALS, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. The students learned that Lou Gehrig was a famous baseball player who played for the New York Yankees in the 20s and 30s. He contracted ALS and his name has become synonymous with this terrible disease.

To pay tribute to Lou Gehrig, baseball's "Iron Man," the students came dressed as their favorite sports hero. This was a perfect example of how the Jewish Academy combines academics and Jewish values into everyday activities, while at the same time participating in fun and exceptional educational experiences.
