Five local Hebrew schools get together to learn about Passover

At last year's Model Matzah Bakery, even the rabbi got into the action of rolling out his own matzah along with the children.

With the approach of Passover, Orlando's Jewish community is in full pre-holiday-madness mode. So much has to be done-house cleaning, Seder preparation, shopping and more shopping. This year children will play a special role in ushering in the Passover holiday with the Model Matzah Bakery.

The traditional matzah bread was round and hand baked, in contrast with the uniform store bought square variety. The eating of the matzah is one of the most fundamental of this holiday, commemorating the haste in which the Israelites left Egypt, not allowing enough time for their dough to rise resulting in the unleavened matzah.

Sponsored by CHS – Chabad's Hebrew School, this unique event brings children together for a hands-on, educational journey exploring the history and significance of Passover and matzah. In fact each participant will begin with stalks of wheat which are winnowed and then ground, the drawing of special well-water and finally, donning the full Matzah-Baker-Master Regalia – hat, apron, floury face and all, will bake a spectacular Matzah!

Five local Hebrew School will be joining for this fun and educational program: Ohev Shalom of Maitland, Shir Shalom of Oviedo, Beit Chaim of Casselberry, Chabad in Maitland and Chabad Lake Mary.

"The Matza Bakery provides children with a very fun experience but also helps develop a profound appreciation for the Holiday. Today, more than ever perhaps, parents appreciate opportunities like this to share their Jewish heritage and tradition – our faith, with the next generation" said Chabad of Lake Mary's Rabbi Yanky Majesky. "Essentially that is what CHS (Chabad Hebrew School) is all about, a fun and exciting, and at the same time meaningful Jewish education.

The Model Matza Bakery will take place on Sunday March 29 at 10 a.m. in the Westin Lake Mary $12 per child. Reserve online at www.JewishNorthOrlando.com or call 407-878-3011.
