JCRC hosts interfaith talk

Ruth Langer

On the evening of Nov. 14, the Jewish Community Relations Council will host a community discussion, "Nostra Aetate: Turning Points for Interfaith Dialogue," in the Hillel Ballroom of the University of Central Florida NorthView building, 3925 Lockwood Blvd., Oviedo. Nostra Aetate is Latin for "in our time."

Nostra Aetate, the Vatican's 1965 Declaration on Relations with Non-Christian Faiths, was notable for several reasons, especially the revocation of the charge that Jews were collectively responsible for the killing of Jesus. The declaration marked a major turning point in Jewish-Catholic relations.

The evening will include opening remarks by Alan Ginsburg, recipient of the Vatican's Benemerenti Medal, and a keynote presentation on Nostra Aetate by Ruth Langer, professor of Jewish Studies and associate director of the Center for Christian-Jewish Learning at Boston College. Small-group discussions will allow participants to share their own journeys with interfaith dialogue. Group discussion leaders will include:

• The Rev. Bryan Fulwider, co-host of the weekly WMFE radio show "Friends Talking Faith with The Three Wise Guys"

• Katrina Jenkins, Rollins College

• Vanessa Zoltan, Harvard University

• Dennis Johnson Jr., Orlando Diocese

• Emad Hamdeh, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

• Subhas Rampersaud, Valencia College

Dinner (vegetarian/kosher/halal) will be served.

Cost is $36 per person; $20 for currently enrolled college students. For more information and registration, visit http://www.jfgo.org/Turning Points.
