JFS Orlando counselors respond to community threats

Jewish Family Services of Greater Orlando is providing onsite counseling for community members needing to discuss recent security concerns at the Maitland Jewish Campus. The Campus was evacuated twice after receiving bomb threats via telephone. JFS Orlando has sent two licensed therapist, Teresa Brown, LCSW, and Carla Fischer, LMHC, to meet with students to discuss their feelings and concerns regarding these recent threats.

Students were open and discussed their feelings of injustice and sadness that the Jewish Community was targeted for hate. "It makes me sad that someone may not like me because I am Jewish," one student stated.

JFS Orlando therapists were there to assist students with sharing their feelings and encouraged them to not give "bullies" the power to change them and to be proud of the person they are. The students were reminded that they are safe and the Campus is a safe place.

Brown told the students that, "Unfortunately, there are others that make poor choices, for whatever the reason, but it is our responsibility to continue to make positive choices and continues to share care and concern for others... that is how we defeat bullies."

JFS Orlando therapists will continue to be at the Campus during the next week. JFS Orlando is proud to provide a hand in helping ensure those on the campus continue to feel safe and secure.
