Machaneh Ohev celebrates 10 years: Open to the Jewish community

Just some of the children from last year's Machaneh Ohev camp.

Machaneh Ohev, Congregation Ohev Shalom's one-week camp for children entering Pk-8th grade, celebrates 10 years this summer! The dates are June 5-9 and the camp takes place at the synagogue located at 613 Concourse Pkwy S. Maitland.

The theme for this year is "One in a Minyan, celebrating 10 years of Jewish friendship and fun."

Machaneh Ohev started as a suggestion from a parent for a "vacation Bible school" type program because the children loved being at Ohev. At first the suggestion was brushed off but after some discussion with Amy Geboff, director of Youth and Family Education and the education committee at the time, Machaneh Ohev was born. The first year there were 42 campers entering K-5th grade and 24 staff.

"It was more fun than anyone ever expected," said Geboff.

Last summer Machaneh Ohev had 186 campers and 34 staff entering Pk-8th grade.

Machaneh Ohev is unique in that each day is planned with games, crafts and songs related to a Jewish theme. This summer the plan is to do the "best of" from the last 10 years. Themes have included, Bible Bonanza, The Menschkins Visit the Land of Ozrimm, Machaneh Ohev LAND/the Jewish Values in Disney, Stars and Stripes and the Magen David, "What's Jewish about everything from numbers and colors to Super Heroes, The Seasons, The Jewish Version of Seussical the Musical, Jewish Holiday Hoopla, Lesser Celebrated Jewish Holidays, and Create Your Own Jewish Adventure, to name a few.

In addition to games, crafts, singing and dancing, each day has water play in the above ground pools and waterslides, two snacks, and before and after care for an additional charge.

Hamotzi and Birkat are said at lunch. Campers bring their lunch three of the days and camp provides a BBQ lunch one day and a pizza lunch another day. On Friday of camp, parents are invited to a camp-style Shabbat complete with a video of the week, Kabbalat Shabbat and songs and refreshments. This year we will have a 10th birthday party for camp.

Machaneh Ohev is open to the Jewish community regardless of synagogue membership. Spaces do fill so if you are thinking of having your child participate in the most fun Jewish week of the year, don't wait too long to register.

For a registration form, contact the synagogue at 407-298-4650.
