November events at St. Augustine Jewish Historical Society

October 19, 2018

The St. Augustine Jewish Historical Society will offer three programs during the month of November, an Oneg Shabbat following 7:30 p.m. services at First Congregation Sons of Israel on Friday evening, Nov. 9; a Memorial Service at the St. Augustine National Cemetery on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I; and a free 2-hour walking tour of Jewish St. Augustine to begin at Mission Nombre de Dios at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14.

The Nov. 9 Oneg Shabbat following regular 7:30 p.m. Friday evening services led by Rabbi Joel Fox at First Congregation Sons of Israel will take place in the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the State of Florida at 161 Cordova Street, St. Augustine, a block south of St. Augustine City Hall. All are welcome to attend; no advance arrangements need be made.

On Sunday, Nov. 11, the Society will mark the 100th anniversary of the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning—the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918. The 11 a.m. Veterans Day event at the National Cemetery, 104 Marine Street, will be brief, remembering the sacrifice of all veterans, focusing on the Jews buried in the nearly 200 year old burial grounds.

On Wednesday, Nov.14, the Historical Society will provide a 2-hour, 1.5-mile walking tour of Jewish St. Augustine, starting at 10 a.m. in the shade of the trees at the southeastern corner of the parking lot at Mission Nombre de Dios, 27 Ocean Avenue, at San Marco Avenue (State Route A1A). The tour will end at First Congregation Sons of Israel, 161 Cordova Street and involves a walk of 1.5 miles. Wear sunscreen and sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. Bring water. There is no charge for this tour.

All are welcome to attend each of these events, no advance arrangements need be made, there is no charge. For further information contact 804-914-4460.
