Obituary - DAVID P. FLAX

 


David P. Flax of Maitland, Florida, beloved husband of Viviane Flax, died on May 11, 2020, at AdventHealth Winter Park. Born on April 4, 1933, in Bayonne, New Jersey, David was the youngest of three sons born to the late Fanny (Swersky) and Samuel Flax. He graduated from Elisabeth Irwin High School in Manhattan, attended Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

David served in the United States Army for two years, stationed in Maryland and California. He returned to the New York area and spent the entirety of his adult life working at Sam Flax, a retail art supply business founded by his father. David and his brothers expanded the business in Manhattan and opened stores in Atlanta, Orlando and Tampa. David later moved to Orlando, where he met Viviane, and worked at Sam Flax on East Colonial Drive for many years. He was a member of Congregation Ohev Shalom in Maitland, the Roth Family Jewish Community Center of Greater Orlando, and was a Master Mason of Peninsula Lodge Number 99, Bayonne, New Jersey.


In addition to his wife, David is survived by a brother, Leonard Flax, daughters Anita Flax and husband Charles Moore, Laura Flax and husband Paul Cheney, and Maria Flax and husband Robert Miller; son Sam Flax; and grandchildren—Sara, Spencer, Carson, Ruth, Alexis, Rachel, Christopher, Jonathan, Eric, Joshua and Savannah. He was predeceased by his brother Sidney.

A graveside service was held May 11 at Ohev Shalom Cemetery in Orlando.
