Scene Around

Melina Santerinu

My first story is about Italy. I went to Italy a few years back. It was one of my favorite places. I visited Pisa, Venice, Florence, Rome, etc. I loved the scenery, the people, the culture... and especially, the FOOD!

More about Italy...

I read this in the World Jewish Congress digest and pass it along to you:

"The WJC and its affiliate, the Union of the Italian Jewish Community, welcome the Italian government's adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's working definition of anti-Semitism, as well as its decision to appoint Professor MILENA SANTERINI as national coordinator for the fight against anti-Semitism.

The IHRA definition includes examples of incidents and expressions that would constitute anti-Semitic behavior, including calling for the harm of Jews, spreading dehumanizing allegations about Jews, and blatant double standards against the State of Israel.

UCEI President NOEMI DI SEGNI applauded the government's adoption of a national coordinator against anti-Semitism as 'a fundamental page in the fight against anti-Jewish hatred in every form, including the particularly insidious form of those who undermine Israel's legitimacy to exist and defend itself.'

Before the decision to adopt IHRA's definition, Italy had taken strong steps to combat anti-Semitism, including joining France, Germany and Belgium in criminalizing Holocaust denial in 2016.

In addition, Italy has been a reliable ally of Israel at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, including being the first European state to publicly state that it planned to reject a Palestinian backed resolution disavowing Israel sovereignty in Jerusalem."

One for the road...

Moshe went to the cemetery to visit his friend Daniel's grave. When he got there, he was shocked to see that Daniel's new headstone was leaning forward by some 45 degrees and could topple over. So Moshe took some wire from his car, tied one end around the headstone and fastened the other end onto a nearby telephone pole. Then he left.

Some days later, two more of Daniel's friends, Abe and Izzy, came to visit him. Abe took one look at the grave and said to Izzy, "That's just like Daniel. He's only been here a short while and already he's got his own phone."
