Upcoming virtual events at The Roth Family JCC

The Summer Author Series

The series continues on Sunday, July 19 at 1 p.m. Rachel Beanland, will discuss her book, “Florence Adler Swims Forever,” in a Zoom conversation.

Based on a true story and told in the vein of J. Courtney Sullivan’s “Saints for All Occasions” and Anita Diamant’s “The Boston Girl,” Beanland’s family saga is a breathtaking portrait of just how far we will go to in order to protect our loved ones and an uplifting portrayal of how the human spirit can endure — and even thrive — after tragedy. Beanland will be interviewed by Fiona Davis, best-selling author of five novels, including “The Dollhouse,” “The Address,” and “The Lions of Fifth Avenue.”

On July 26, at 1 p.m., Kristin Harmel will discuss her new book, “The Book of Lost Names.” Harmel will share about this heart-stopping tale of survival and heroism centered on a female forger who risks everything to help Jewish children escape Nazi-occupied France.

On Aug. 13, 1 p.m., Adeena Susman will share recipes from her Israeli cookbook, “Sababa: Fresh, Sunny Flavors from My Israeli Kitchen.”

These events are virtual and free. To register please visit https://orlandojcc.org/arts-culture/author-speaker-series.

Books may also be purchased on the site.

Spend an afternoon in Masada

Pack a bag and join others on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 5 p.m., as the JCC embarks on an unforgettable trip to Masada. It’s often described as being in the middle of nowhere, yet people come from all over the world to experience this “must see” destination in Israel. But this is much more than a mere sightseeing tour! We’ll also learn some cool “insider” info about Masada from our professional tour guide, Rotem Shahar, whose deep knowledge of all things Israel makes every stop on our tour a rich learning experience.

The cost is only $18, ($15 for JCC members). Registration is now open.
