Pay tribute to Holocaust survivors and victims and participate in Yom Hashoah observance

March 26, 2021

Yom HaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day, is observed on April 8 as a day of commemoration for the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the actions carried out by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.

The date to commemorate Yom HaShoah was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the uprising at the Warsaw Ghetto. This was the largest, symbolically most important Jewish uprising, and the first urban rebellion, in German-occupied Europe. This resistance in Warsaw inspired other revolts in ghettos including Bialystok & Minsk and killing centers Treblinka & Sobibor.

Leading up to April 8, we will be remembering some of the heroes from the Warsaw Ghettos on social media.

The Holocaust Center invites the community to add a flower to itsYom HaShoah virtual tribute garden to honor them or a hero of your choosing. A donation to grow the garden is a meaningful way to support our mission while remembering or celebrating a survivor or victim. Each flower will represent a cherished person, never to be forgotten.

A flower can be named for a tribute gift of $18.

For gifts of $36 or more, The Center will also send a card with a packet of flower seeds to a special recipient of your choice so they may start or add to a garden of their own!

The Holocaust Center will host a Yom Hashoah commemoration, titled “Journey of Conscience,” on April 8 at 6 p.m. There will be a live virtual panel and candlelighting from the Warsaw Ghetto.

Marc Pollick developed “Journey of Conscience” to travel with students, teachers, and Holocaust Survivors to Auschwitz, Majdanek, Terezin, and other concentration camps in the 1980s. The groups traveled through Prague, Warsaw, Vienna, Budapest, Amsterdam, and the State of Israel. His goal was to enable people to become part of a journey to be remembered with awe. The trip offered rare insights into the horror and tragedy of the Holocaust and how some managed to survive.

Pollick will moderate a panel of people who have done this trip at different times and with different groups. Yet, the power of the experience is the same.

Panelists include Leah Hornik, Brett and Shira Spector, and David Ravanshenas about how the deep impact of their journeys shaped their lives. The Spectors met while volunteering for March of the Living. Hornik took a gap year immediately following high school. Ravanshenas was so moved, he continues to take groups every year. They will share their experiences, emotions, and important moments to help us understand how we can impact change today.

Jonny Daniels will join the discussion live from the Warsaw Ghetto.

Daniels felt a life-long passion to give back and founded an organization called From the Depths. Daniels will share the story of a Lyubuv Volchek, a “Righteous Gentile” who at 11 years old saved a young Jewish girl who escaped into the forest. Daniels will hold a candle lighting ceremony and everyone is welcome to light a candle of their own in memory of the 6 million Jews and many others who perished during the Holocaust.

The event will conclude with the Mourners Kaddish by Rabbi Rick Sherwin.
