Pacifying is a great idea, but it hasn't worked yet

Dear Editor:

“JCRC’s thoughts on antisemitism” reminds me of a sixth-grade paper I would be required to write in Delaney Park Elementary School sixth grade English class.

Having lived in the Greater Orlando area for over 80 years, I have seen the pendulum swing in both directions. Having been on the receiving end of blatant antisemitism throughout my school days, I can tell you today’s antisemitism is child’s play.

“Jesus loves me yes I know for the Bible tells me so”… “Hey Jew Boy, did you eat your pork sandwich at lunch today?” and so forth, Gideon’s Bibles, Christmas Carols, Christmas tree decorating, Easter egg hunting in Delaney Park. I was lucky! My uncle Jerry (Jerome J Bornstein) was not so lucky nor were his children. Ask my brother Henry about the “Burning Cross” in front of the Greenburg house by today’s Howard Middle School. It could go on and on including all of the anti-colored activities/actions that took place in Orlando including today’s Division Street.

What the Jewish Community Relations Council that we have today is trying to do is pacify — “please everyone with peace.” Great idea, but has not been successful for thousands of years in respect to the Jewish People. I’m still holding my breath! Their purpose is to be congratulated. Their methodology should be questioned. Rabbi Kay is commendable and should be supported LOUD and CLEAR. I for one will stand behind him 100 percent.

Donna Shader has been here long enough to know what the past has been here in Orlando. Jewish organizations should be in the forefront in establishing good “Black and White” community relations. We have been trying for 80 years that I know of. Now we have a third group to contend with — the Brothers of Islam. Totally different history, totally different story. But WE MUST NOT QUIT!

In the past there were other groups that took a totally different perspective. There was a small group called “Jews that Shoot.” That may not be too far off in the future the way things are going. I for one may even support such a group to protect Jewish establishments, schools, social events, and more. Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to this. Hell, I’ll have to go purchase the weapons I just sent to the pawn shop! Get re-certified, make a sizable purchase for items of defense. Re-create “Jews that Shoot.” At my age I am not too old to defend my Jewish way of life nor that of my grandchild.

We need more unity and active leadership when this topic comes up in conversation. Hiding behind the walls of synagogues, JCCs and seek law enforcement advice.
