Burton Schlossman of Long Beach, N.Y., died on Tuesday, April 16, 2013. He was 86 years old. Mr. Schlossman was born in New York City on April 28, 1926, to the late Joseph and Cecilia Gottlieb Schlossman. Following high school he enlisted in the Navy. Mr. Schlossman was a noted glass designer and a longtime member of Kiwanis. Maria A. (Marianne) Byer, of Estero, Fla., died on Monday, April 8, 2013. She was 77 years old. Mrs. Byer was born in Germany on July 22, 1935, and moved from there to Orlando in 1956. For many years she worked in the medical records department of local hospitals. She was the widow of the late Abner Byer, who passed away in 1981, and was also predeceased by her daughter, Christine Ann Reinking, in 2008. Florence Altchiler of Miami died on Monday, April 1, 2013. She was 89 years old. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., she was born on Dec. 20, 1923, to the late Julius and Sarah Hummel Rapoport. She grew up in New York attending local area schools. While in the workforce, Mrs. Altchiler was a secretary for legal and accounting firms. In 1945, she married the late Sidney Salkin, to whom she was married for 28 years before he passed away in 1973. Shirley Makaron of Lake Mary, Fla., died on Monday, April 1, 2013. She was 86 years old. A New York native, she was born on Jan. 18, 1927, to the late Samuel and Bertha Baum Snyder. She married the late David Makaron in 1948 and they were married for nearly 48 years when he passed away in 1996. Mrs. Makaron moved to Boca Raton and ultimately relocated to Central Florida in 2008 to be closer to family. Myron N. Blattner, of Altamonte Springs, died on Monday, March 11, 2013. He was 77 years old. A Jacksonville native, Mr. Blattner was born on April 11, 1935, to the late Sidney and Ann Nabin Blattner. He attended area schools and the University of Florida. He moved to the Orlando area from Atlanta in 1974, and among other things, was best known as a successful business broker. Marcella D. Wolgel of Altamonte Springs, died on Monday, March 11, 2013. She was 84 years old. She was born in St. Louis to the late Abraham and Sarah Komornik Kaner on April 27, 1928. She attended school in Chicago, earning her associate’s degree and becoming a teacher. She was the widow of the late Emanuel Wolgel who passed away in February 2008. Beatrice Rabinovitz of Miami died recently. She was born in Chicago to the late Sarah and Morris Leibowitz. She moved to Miami to be with her daughters, who survive her, Marlene (Richard) Levy of Miami and Donna (late David) Levine also of Miami. Loved ones said she raised her children with total selflessness, unconditional love and constant encouragement and was truly the matriarch of her family. Martin Valeri, of Orlando, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2013. He was 74 years old. A Philadelphia native, he was born on July 29, 1938, to the late Orlando and Pearl Quell Valeri. He joined the U.S. Navy immediately following high school and later graduated from Temple University, attending school on the G.I. Bill. Ida VanBaalen, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2013. She was 94 years old. Mrs. VanBaalen was born in Detroit on Feb. 13, 1919, to the late Nathan and Ethel Eagle Fitlow. A high school graduate, Mrs. VanBaalen worked as a secretary in accounting and was a member of Temple Emanu-El of Birmingham, Ala., for over 62 years. Mrs. VanBaalen was married in 1946 to Harold VanBaalen who passed away in 1989. In 2009, she relocated to the Orlando area from Birmingham to be closer to her daughter and family. Hedi Thomas Goldfarb of Winter Park, Fla., died on Wednesday, Feb. 6. She was 96 years old. Mrs. Goldfarb was born on Sept. 26, 1916, in Vienna, Austria, to the late Adolf and Bettina Reik Liebermann. Growing up between the two World Wars, she attended school and earned a college degree. She immigrated to England in 1938 and made her way to the United States in 1940. Sandra Gordon of Winter Park, Fla., died on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013. She was 96 years old. Mrs. Gordon was born on Sept. 25, 1917 in New York. She was a lifelong resident of New York until moving to Florida more than a decade ago. She was married to Sol Zorn and then to Daniel Gordon, both of whom were in the entertainment industry.
