Celebrate Yom Ha'atzmaut this year at the J campus

An Orlando family celebrates Israel Independence Day at Cranes Roost in 2013.

On Tuesday, May 6 from 5 p.m.-9 p.m., the Jewish community of Orlando will be bringing our homeland home to the Roth JCC in Maitland. After years of celebrating Israel Independence Day at Cranes Roost Park in Altamonte Spring and out in the community, the mega-event is coming home to the Roth JCC's outdoor facilities in Maitland. Roth JCC Assistant Executive Director Robby Etzkin explained that "By eliminating the significant fixed costs associated with Cranes Roost it allows the JCC to not need to charge Jewish agencies for booths and to lower the prices of children's activities which we hope to make as close to free as possible."

This year's event at the JCC will feature live Israeli music, children's choir performances, Israeli dancing, Middle Eastern kosher food, Judaic shopping, and children's activities. In addition, the JCC will keep the newly heated pool open during the event for those who want to celebrate like on the beaches of Tel Aviv.

In addition, another significant change is that the event will be on a weeknight in order to celebrate on the actual day of Yom Ha'atzmaut.

"We felt this was a good year for a change with the way the holidays, including Mothers' Day, fell," said Etzkin.

Two days prior, on Sunday, May 4 at 6:45 p.m., will be the community's annual observance of Yom Ha'zikaron when we remember Israel's fallen soldiers and victims of terror. This event will take place in the JCC auditorium.
