Central Florida's Independent Jewish Voice
Machaneh Ohev 2014 invites all Jewish children entering Pre-K through 8th grade in the fall to come to "The Happiest Jewish Place on Earth-Machaneh Ohev Land," June 9-13.
The popular, one week, Jewish specialty camp takes place at Congregation Ohev Shalom 613 Concourse Pkwy S., Maitland. The 8th year of camp will take Chanichim (campers) and Madrichim (counselors) into "the wonderful world of Machaneh Ohev where mitzvot come true."
Each day participants will have fun exploring different Jewish values through Disney movies including "Frozen," "Finding Nemo," "Cars," "Toy Story," "Aladdin," "Lion King" and more.
Camp starts each day at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Early care begins at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 5:15 p.m. Each day begins around the flag with the entire camp singing Israeli and American songs and the Hebrew words of the day. Hamotzi is said before lunch and Birkat Hamazon and Shira (singing) and Rikudiyah (Israeli dancing) after lunch. Water play in pools and water slides is part of each day as is a snack in the morning and in the afternoon. Chanichim bring a dairy lunch four days and one day is a pizza lunch. Maccabiah, a camp wide Olympics is always one of the highlights of the week. The last day of camp is an extended day where families are invited at 4 p.m. for a camp style Kabbalat Shabbat and end of week video and BBQ Shabbat dinner. Meet the Counselor will be on Sunday, June 8 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
The Kesher program which is for rising 7th and 8th graders is designed for participants to enjoy the fun of camp but also learn leadership skills to make that transition from camper to counselor. Campers will do group building and Tikun Olam projects as well as lead some camp activities for the rest of the camp. They will have fun exploring the values of leadership in the Disney movies.
A free week of Machaneh Ohev is being raffled off at the member rate. Tickets are $5 each and 6 for $20. The raffle will be drawn at Meet the Counselor.
