Holocaust Center hosts Teachers Institute

This year marked the 19th anniversary of the Holocaust Center's annual Teachers Institute. Teachers at every grade level, and in every discipline, were invited to participate in this five-day institute designed to assist them in incorporating Holocaust Education in their classroom as required by Florida Statutes, Chapter 1003.42. Nearly two dozen teachers, from five various school counties, and local community residents enrolled in this year's program.

The week-long program, which began June 16, was comprised of lectures, films, printed material and survivor testimony to provide participants accurate, useful information about the Nazi era and help them identify the things that allowed the Holocaust to happen. The course included a chronological history of the Holocaust beginning with the pre-war years and ending with contemporary anti-Semintism and hate groups.

Just as important, the Teachers Institute encourages thoughtful discussion on how to help children understand the importance of tolerance, good citizenship, and nurturing democratic values.
