Jewish families come together for Mother's Day Shabbat in the Park

Our Jewish Orlando's Shalom Families celebrated Mother's Day with a special Shabbat in the Park on Friday, May 8, in Central Park on Park Avenue in Winter Park.

Each family in attendance was welcomed with a basket containing all the Shabbat essentials (challah, grape juice and candles). After a picnic dinner, parents socialized and shared dessert while their children made special flowers to present to their moms.

The families shared stories and songs, played under a giant keshet (rainbow) and joined in an "I Spy a Sweet Shabbat in the Park" scavenger hunt, which wouldn't have been as much fun without hand-made binoculars.

The Mother's Day Shabbat in the Park concluded with families blessing their children under a Talit tent. A special thanks to Shalom Families chairwoman Fiona Avani for helping to organize this very special evening.

Shalom Families' next event will be a pool party, co-sponsored with The Roth Family Jewish Community Center, on Sunday, June 28, at the JCC in Maitland.

Shalom Families is an Our Jewish Orlando (OJO) initiative that helps to engage young Jewish families and parents to the Central Florida Jewish Community. OJO is the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando's Young Leadership Division. The group is dedicated to creating, shaping and sustaining a lifelong commitment to Jewish life, community and philanthropy for the next generation of Jews in Central Florida.
