Gerald H. Amsterdam, MD, age 97, passed away at his residence on Sept. 1, 2016. Dr. Amsterdam, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., was born on Oct. 16, 1918, to the late Joseph and Dorothy Davidow Amsterdam.
He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with his bachelor’s degree and his medical degree. He also did post-graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Amsterdam was a general surgeon and practiced in the Philadelphia area for more than 40 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a medical officer in the 385th Air Service Group in Japan.
On Aug. 30, 1945, in Philadelphia, he married the former Phylis Seder, his wife of 71 years who survives him. They retired to Sarasota and in 2008 relocated to the Orlando area.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Amsterdam is survived by his sons, Michael (Jody-Anne) Amsterdam of Winter Springs and Robert Amsterdam (Susan Richards) of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Joseph Frank Amsterdam in 2011.
