Learning and living the teachings of MLK

January 31, 2020

Jewish Academy of Orlando celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. day through art, songs, writing and conversation. Themes that ranged through the day included hope, uniqueness, and community.

In the art room, students worked together to make collages of hands coming together that illustrated uniqueness and unity and ultimately respect for their peers, teachers, and the greater community. Eric Levine, "Mr. Eric," who heads up the school's acclaimed performing arts program, led students in songs of hope including, "I have a dream."

Discussions about Dr. King's ideals such as character, respect, kindness, and compassion were woven throughout the day. Even the character strength of Hope was incorporated into the weekly service. Different grades came together to experience each activity to build community across the school.

This event was designed to serve as a reminder of the ideals and values to which Dr. King dedicated his life: kindness, compassion, respect and understanding.

"For our students, Martin Luther King Jr. day has always been a day of service, kindness and learning about the civil rights movement," stated Amy Polacek, director of Academics. "Instead of having the day off from school, our students experience a meaningful day in the spirit of Dr. King."

Head of School Alan Rusonik added, "Dr. King once said that, 'Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.' At Jewish Academy of Orlando, we strive to live by this goal to truly serve our students."
