A graduate of Franklin H.S. and Columbia University, he was on the crew team. He graduated from the University of Buffalo Dental School and then entered the Army. After serving his country, he returned to Rochester and started his dental practice. In 1965, Ron co-founded the Rochester Rowing Club. He taught Learn-to-Row classes on the Genesee River, on Irondequoit Bay and later at the Genesee Waterways Center. Ron helped start the U of R Crew program in 1981. In 2002, he was inducted into the Rochester Jewish Sports Hall of Fame for his rowing accomplishments.

Ron served on the board of The Hochstein School, was a longtime member of Temple Beth El in Rochester, a member of Congregation Ohev Shalom in Orlando and he was active in many community organizations in the Rochester area.

Ron was predeceased by his son, Joseph; his parents; and brother, Bert. He is survived by his daughters, Debby Gendzier (Larry) and Betsy Wahlquist (Bob); his grandchildren — Lauren Gendzier, Danny Gendzier (Kaitlyn) and Jacki Wahlquist Piha (Matt); his sister, Marilyn Manis; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Congregation Ohev Shalom General Fund to be use for technology improvements in Ron’s memory.
