Caring for senior residents during Ian

November 11, 2022

Hurricane Ian came through Central Florida as a Category 4 storm on Sept. 28, bringing devastation to the West Coast of the state. As it traveled across to the East Coast, it lessened in strength, however, much damage was yet to be seen in Central Florida.

The Mayflower Retirement Community in Winter Park was one of the unfortunate examples of Ian’s damaging impact. Sufficient amount of water seeped into the parking garage, which eventually damaged the electrical system. With no elevator service in the building, the only option was to evacuate the residents to either area hotels or to family members.

With its mission to connect and aid the senior Jewish community of Orlando, The Jewish Pavilion has remained dedicated to this objective by phoning, visiting and reaching out to the residents who have recently been moved from their residences.

A coordinated effort between The Mayflower, The Jewish Pavilion and the Sheraton Hotel of Maitland enabled Shabbat services to be held on Nov. 5 led by Jewish Pavilion volunteer, Lori Slutsky. Many thanks to all who helped make this possible and bring a semblance of normalcy to our seniors.
