Labeling photo-shopped pictures

Dear Editor:

I find the undated photograph of the University of California’s Berkeley School of Law with a yard sign reading “Jews Not Allowed” on the front page of the Dec. 30, 2022, issue to be both disturbing and outrageous.  Yet, the more I look at the picture I suspect it is not a photograph at all but a “photo-illustration” which is a euphemism for a doctored photograph. The caption under the picture does not tell us whether it is an accurate photograph or someone’s photo-shop illustration.

At a time when technology now allows publications to easily alter true and accurate images, journalists owe their readers an explanation of what is published under the banner of “Florida Jewish News.” I hope the editor will inform the readers whether the picture of Bolt Hall is a photograph or an illustration and, in either event, pledge to abide by journalistic standards in the future by labeling photo-illustrations in the picture’s caption.

Editor’s comment: Whether the photo is photo-shopped or not — it’s clear to see that it is — is not the real issue. The disturbing and outrageous issue is that college campuses are becoming more and more antisemitic, and they are getting away with it.
