JAO hires new head of school

Chana Ben-Abraham

"I'm thrilled to announce the appointment of Chana Ben-Abraham as our next head of school," said Joe Schwartz, JAO Board president, in a press release announcing the new hire. "She is a charismatic and inspiring leader with a contagious enthusiasm for education. She is passionate about helping students learn and grow, and she is committed to providing our students with the best possible education. She is also a gifted communicator and a natural leader. I am confident that she will build on our school's strong foundation and lead us into the future."

Ben-Abraham has over 15 years of Jewish educational experience. She was most recently dean of Jewish Engagement and Innovation at the Ann & Nate Levine Academy in Dallas, Texas. As a director at NCSY, she was the liaison for the City of Dallas Public High Schools for all Jewish education and youth programs.

Ben-Abraham received her undergraduate degree in history with a minor in Jewish Studies from UCLA and a master's degree from the University of Texas in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.

In her new role, which begins with the 2023-2024 school year, Ben-Abraham will build community relations, student recruitment and donor coordination. Amy Polacek will continue as principal and Theresa Evens will continue in her role as executive director.

Ben-Abraham is excited to be a part of JAO. "From the very first moment that I stepped onto the grounds of the Jewish Academy of Orlando, it was abundantly clear to me how warm and welcoming the community truly is," she shared. "It is my sincere belief that by working together, we will build the brightest Jewish future for our children. Our shared commitment to excellence in education will guide us as we inspire young minds to embrace their Jewish identity, cultivate their intellectual curiosity and become compassionate leaders in our global community."

Ben-Abraham and her husband, Elly, have three children. In her spare time, she enjoys public speaking, creative writing and volunteering in her community.
