Matt Gaetz nominated for attorney general

(JTA) — President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Matt Gaetz as his nominee for attorney general.

As attorney general, Gaetz would head the government department responsible for investigating and prosecuting hate crimes, including antisemitism.

Gaetz, 42, was elected to Congress in 2016, where he has represented a district in the Florida Panhandle. Senators from both parties appeared surprised by the nomination, potentially imperiling Gaetz’s chances of securing the job. If he is confirmed to the role by the Senate, he would succeed Merrick Garland, a former federal judge who is Jewish.
