Upcoming events at the Holocaust Center

This month the Holocaust Center is hosting several programs:

The latest exhibition, “Margret Rey & the Making of Curious George,” is running from June 5 through Aug. 22. The exhibit uncovers the story of Margret Rey, a Jewish woman who, with her husband, escaped Nazi-occupied France on handmade bikes, carrying the manuscript for what would become Curious George.

Courageous Conversations: Transforming Extremism through Dialogue — Two events: June 17, 2 – 6 p.m. will be a Youth Workshop and Dinner, held at UCF/Valencia Downtown Campus, Dr. Phillips Academic Commons and June 17, community event, 5:30-6 p.m. for light bites and 6-8 p.m. program.

Musician and “peacebuilder” Daryl Davis, known for his transformative work of hate groups, and Jeff Schoep, former neo-Nazi leader .

The Summer Youth Series offers “Fighting Spirit: Krav Maga & Jewish History, Session 2,” June 22, from 1 – 2 p.m. How is Krava Maga connected to Holocaust history? Hosted in partnership with Shaan Saar Krava Maga Orlando, Central Florida’s only evidence-based self-defense program for youth, children will learn Krav Maga, No Gi Jiu Jitsu, and social skills coaching.

Sundays at the Center — Docent-led tour for children of the Margret Reys exhibit, June 29, noon – 1 p.m.

Book Club — On July 16, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. The book “Jews in the Garden,” by Judy Rakowsky, will be discussed. Author Rakowsky delves into her family’s Holocaust history after discovering a mass grave in a Polish garden.

This year’s book club explores works about women during the Holocaust, delving into their unique experiences and perspectives. Each session includes in-depth discussions that provide historical context.
