Congregation Ohev Shalom was honored to host the Orlando Symphony Orchestra on June 12 as it launched its Two Concerts, One Community series. "Many of our congregants regularly attend performances at the Dr. Phillips Center, but welcoming the symphony and world-renowned baritone Lawrence Craig into our own sanctuary was beyond special. Seeing and hearing the musicians on our bimah was truly magical," said COS President Debby Gendzier.
The sanctuary of Maitland's COS came alive with music, emotion and a deep sense of community. About 150 guests experienced an unforgettable evening under the baton of Music Director David Handel in the first of a two-part concert series, which was open to the community.
Acclaimed baritone Lawrence Craig captivated the audience with powerful renditions of Kaddish, Waterboy and Ol' Man River, among others. The synagogue setting, more intimate than a traditional concert hall, heightened the evening's moving atmosphere.
Craig shared a poignant personal story, revealing that he performed wearing his father's kipah - gifted by a Jewish family who helped raise him after he lost his own father aåt a young age. Though Craig comes from a long line of pastors, he expressed a deep respect for the Jewish faith, adding meaning to each piece he performed.
Audience members were visibly moved throughout the night. "The music stirred our hearts, and the stories gave it depth," said COS Executive Director Tracy Hilbert. "It was a true celebration of connection and community."
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this extraordinary evening of song, reflection and shared spirit. If you missed it, we invite you to attend the next installment of the series on Thursday, Sept. 4, featuring the Violins of Hope.
