Obituary - ZELDA MIRSKY NEWMAN

 


Zelda Mirsky Newman, 88, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015, at Hospice of the Valley—Sherman Home, in Phoenix, Arizona. Born in Savannah on Oct. 2, 1927, she was the daughter of Fannie and Norman Mirsky. She married Solomon Max Newman on Nov. 26, 1950 in Savannah, Georgia.

Mrs. Newman attended the University of Alabama and graduated with a degree in education. She was part owner of the Star Department Stores located in Savannah until she joined Friedman Jewelers in 1978 as an executive assistant before being promoted to handling the diamond vault. She retired at 79 years old. Mrs. Newman was a longtime member of the B’nai Brith Jacob Synagogue and served on the Bnos Chesed Shelemes as treasurer.

She is survived by her three children, Beth Shernoff (Neil Shernoff) of Scottsdale, Arizona; Annette Goldwasser (Albert Goldwasser) of Lake Mary, Florida; and Steven Newman (Star Newman) of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Aaron Goldwasser, Michael Goldwasser (Katie Goldwasser), Amanda Klein (Michael Klein), Lexi Newman, Hildy Newman, and predeceased by Brent Shernoff. Her sister, Sally Kaplan

of Atlanta, Georgia, also survives her.

The funeral service was held at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus of B’nai Brith Jacob Synagogue. Remembrances: Congregation Ohev Shalom, 613 Concourse Pkwy. S. Maitland, FL 32751.
