  • Billboards in LA and Philadelphia ask, 'Who's behind this chaos?'

    Carin M. Smilk|Aug 23, 2024

(JNS) - In a sign of the times, billboards have been placed along highways in Los Angeles and Philadelphia to address the rising tide of antisemitism in the United States. "Who's behind this chaos?" reads one. Another says, "Did you miss your flight when this airport was shut down by an anti-Israel mob?" Three billboards were put up in Los Angeles during the last week of July, and two in Philadelphia were erected the first week of August. Both are scheduled to stay in place through most of the...

  • Day 23: Weather or not?

    Carin M. Smilk|May 1, 2020

(JNS)-What's with this weather, anyway? I mean, the majority of us have accepted our lives as indoor cats right now, but a little sun wouldn't hurt, especially in the U.S. Northeast, where as of today, the highest cases of COVID-19 can be found in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. I'm not thrilled to be part of this group, but that's what it is. My husband tells me that is an essential business; after all, it’s basically food and beverages. He’s not such a drinker, but recognizes that others are. Now, that distinction was not so apparent at first to the nice man named Izzy who runs the nearby la... Full story

  • Day Two: 'Adrian axed apples accidentally in Arizona'

    Carin M. Smilk|Mar 27, 2020

(JNS)—I knew it, I knew it, I just knew it... so they closed the coffee place. I hadn’t even recycled my paper cup from Monday when I saw the online notice that night. Foiled. Even though I passed right by my friendly barista on the street on Sunday, when she assured me they would be doing takeout for the foreseeable future. Instead, I went to the local bagel shop, another neighborhood haunt. I picked up a dozen bagels for dinner (defrosted the lox last night), but stared for a minute when I first got there. Right. St. Patrick’s Day for some... Full story
