  • In record year of tourism, Israel shines at tourism fair

    Israel Kasnett|Dec 14, 2018

(JNS)-Israel had much to tout at the World Travel Market tourism fair in London last week-namely, its best tourism year yet. October proved to be a record-breaker, thanks to almost 500,000 tourists injecting $676.3 million into the economy. It helped that Israel has increased its marketing campaigns, and that this year celebrated the country's 70th anniversary. At the fair itself, it may have seemed surprising that Israel's pavilion was situated in the Europe section, as opposed to being next... Full story

  • Israelis see left-right struggle, not differences with Arabs, as most significant conflict

    Dec 14, 2018

JERUSALEM (JTA)—For the first time, Israelis said the main point of conflict in their society is between left and right and not between Jews and Arabs. That’s what an annual assessment by the Israel Democracy Institute found in its annual survey. Meanwhile, nearly half of Israelis again said they believe their democracy is in “grave danger.” In the survey of 1,041 Jewish and Arab respondents, some 36 percent held the view that tension between the left and right is the main point of contention in society, with 28 percent saying it is the con... Full story

    Cnaan Liphshiz|Dec 14, 2018

KRIMPEN AAN DE IJSSEL, Netherlands (JTA)-For two years, the world's only seaworthy life-size replica of Noah's Ark has been wowing passengers traveling along Holland's Maas River. Built according to the specifications detailed in the Hebrew Bible, the 390-foot-long vessel towers to a height of 75 feet. It boasts enough wood to fell 12,000 trees. And its distinct form dominates the coastline of the small town hosting it deep in southern Holland's so-called Bible Belt. Dwarfing even some... Full story

  • 'Manchester by the Sea' director's latest Broadway play follows a Jewish family dealing with tragedy

    Curt Schleier|Dec 14, 2018

(JTA)—On the phone last week, just before the revival of his play “The Waverly Gallery” opened on Broadway, Kenneth Lonergan sounded harried. There had been some set malfunctions earlier in the week, just as critics were getting ready to start their reviews. He acknowledged the play is hard to take—as much for him as for the viewer. “‘Cathartic’ seems to imply that writing it made me feel better,” Lonergan said. “It didn’t.” Perhaps the critics’ takes could lift his spirits. “The Waverly Gallery,” which runs through Jan. 27 at the John Golden... Full story

  • Pence on Airbnb

    Ron Kampeas|Dec 14, 2018

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (JTA)—Vice President Mike Pence said the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement targeting Israel has “no place” in the U.S. market, and cited Airbnb’s delisting of West Bank Jewish settlements as an example of the movement. “In the wake of Airbnb’s decision to ban Jewish homes in Jerusalem and the West Bank, we made it clear, the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement is wrong and it has no place in the free enterprise of the United States of America,” Pence said at the annual conference of the Israeli American Coun... Full story
