Join the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Orlando (JGSGO) on Sunday, May 3, 2 p.m., for a walk-through tour of the Orange County Library System’s new genealogy library, located at 1821 East Silver Star Road, Ocoee, FL 34761. This is one block east of Clarke Road and Silver Star Road, about 1 mile north of the West Oaks Mall. The OCLS moved its genealogy library from the downtown Orlando library to the West Oaks branch in Ocoee. After much work by the library staff, the facility opened in February. In late March it was announced that the Jewish Pavilion was one of nine winning organizations chosen to have its logo placed on the LYNX public service bus. On Wednesday, April 15, staff and supporters of the Pavilion attended an unveiling of the bus just outside Amway Center, alongside representatives of the other winning nonprofits. Temple L’Chayim of Clermont hosted a special Yom Ha’Shoah service to honor and memorialize the victims of the Holocaust as well as the national and international war efforts by all American Veterans. All veterans of foreign wars were invited with their families to join together for this special tribute, held at the Clermont City Center. ORLANDO (April 15, 2015)—JFS Orlando will host a free interactive workshop series on eating, involving everything from food tasting to budget shopping. The series is called Eat Healthy On a Budget. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on May 20 at the Publix Winter Park Village, located at 440 North Orlando Avenue. The Roth Family Jewish Community Center of Greater Orlando has revived its longtime theater program, staging a 50th anniversary production of "Fiddler on the Roof" from May 2-10. In late March Julie Levitt of Orlando hosted a Passover seder for somewhere between 10 and 50 guests. Like most experienced hostesses, she prepared the traditional Seder plate, set a festive table, and warmly welcomed guests. Twenty-seven families from Congregation Ohev Shalom enjoyed celebrating Shabbat together March 27 and 28 at the Family Shabbaton. The Shabbaton was held at Camp Warren Willis in Leesburg with the theme of "The Gift of Shabbat." Families with toddlers to couples without their children enjoyed praying, playing, learning, eating, and schmoozing in the true spirit of Shabbat. There is a new synagogue on the block, although it isn’t really a new one. Perhaps the term should be “changed” synagogue. Congregation Shomer Ysrael, located at 5382 Hoffner Ave., Orlando, was for several years a Messianic congregation with about 200 members.
