Since December of last year, 17-year-old Lake Mary High School junior Frances Hoffen has been doing just that. On Dec. 31, the teen-ager discovered an article by the Sentinel's Kate Santich about an...
As Passover seders approach next month, and many Jews again recite the list of 10 plagues that were wrought upon the Egyptians, it behooves us to consider, "What are today's modern-day plagues, and what am I doing to help combat them?" Indeed, that's the question that a group of teens and mature adults asked themselves at a recent Jewish Pavilion intergenerational program held at the Village on the Green senior-living facility in Longwood. The "frogs and locusts of the past" may be somewhat...
Earlier this year during a Shabbat service with the Jewish Pavilion, a resident had requested a mezuzah for her room. She is a survivor of the Holocaust and she “hid” from persecution at a Catholic orphanage in Belgium. Her request inspired me to include a mezuzah-making project with the children at Ohev Shalom on their “mitzvah day” at Hebrew school. They lovingly and carefully rolled and inserted the Hebrew prayers inside the mezuzah, which they created and decorated. Then they learn the Shema prayer. We talked about having this ritual...
