  • Temple Israel hosts community memorial service on Yom Kippur

    On Yom Kippur Day, Wednesday, Oct. 12, starting at 4:30 p.m., High Holiday services at Temple Israel will be open to the community (no tickets required) beginning with the afternoon prayer service of Mincha. All prayer services will be held in the main sanctuary. Following Mincha at 6 p.m. there will be a community memorial service at which time all are invited to remember in prayer loved ones who are no longer with us.   • JFS Orlando builds computer lab

    JFS Orlando recently received a $30,550 grant from the annual Community Investment Grant Round at Central Florida Foundation. The grant will be used to establish a computer lab to be used by JFS Orlando clients and assist in agency technology upgrades.     The Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando (JFGO) recently awarded $7,800 in Jewish Teen Education Grants for the 2016-17 academic year.     The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center is kicking off its fall cultural season with a new exhibit titled Two Regimes.     On Wednesday, Sept. 7, Chabad of North Orlando kicked off its local CTeen chapter for the coming school year.     While most people prepare for the Jewish holidays a week in advance, the Jewish Pavilion staff begin their preparations several months in advance. Pictured are 50 challahs and honey cakes, service booklets and High Holiday paper goods to share with over 500 seniors in long- term care.     In response to the Pulse nightclub massacre, Temple Israel organized a campaign to raise funds for the One Orlando Fund through the sale of T-shirts. The unique design, created by Emily Raij, incorporated remembrance of the 49 victims in a tree-of-life with Jewish symbols and a rainbow. But just contributing money was not enough.     HaZamir Orlando, the international Jewish High School choir, held a successful Open House last week, launching their inaugural 2016-17 season. Teens from all over the surrounding Orlando area and their parents attended an informational open house that ended with the group singing in beautiful four-part harmony as a group for the first time.     It's smiles all around, as seniors at Siena Memory Care enjoy both human and canine visitors. Part of "Licks and Hugs," this Jewish Pavilion program brings select dogs to seniors for occasional visitation.
