Obituary - MARVIN MYER NATHAN

Dr. Marvin M. Nathan of Winter Park passed away on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at Hospice of the Comforter in Altamonte Springs. He was 98 years old. Dr. Nathan was born to Jacob and Elizabeth Greenberg Nathan of Ocilla, Ga., on May 23, 1915, in Onancock, Va., where his mother went to stay with her family to give birth. After the birth, they returned to Ocilla, where he excelled in school and was admitted to the University of Georgia at the age of 17, with the plan to go directly into medical school. Following the untimely death of his father, he left school (with the assurance of the Dean of the Medical School that should he be able to return, there would be a place for him) he returned home to help in his family’s business. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to New York where he served as a munitions specialist. When there became a shortage of doctors during the war, the Army sent him back to the University of Georgia College of Medicine to complete his medical training.

It was in New York, that he met and ultimately married his partner in life and business, Charlotte Friedman, on June 14, 1944. Following the war, he was able to fulfill his dream of becoming a physician.

Dr. Nathan was a family physician, treating patients from all walks of life, regardless of their ability to pay. When he finally retired from active practice at age 90, there were boxes of unpaid bills for services he had performed for his patients.

In 2009, he and Charlotte retired to Orlando and moved into the Winter Park Towers, where he continued to help neighbors when they came to him with their ailments.

Dr. Nathan is survived by his wife of 69 years, Charlotte; his sons, Franklin (Linda) of Tampa, Harold of Seattle and Gary (Debbie) of Atlanta; his daughter Sara (Dr. Louis) Stern, who is the current president of Congregation Ohev Shalom; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Elaine Sackett.

Funeral services, with military honors, were held at the Ohev Shalom Pavilion with Rabbis Aaron Rubinger and David Kay and Cantor Allan Robuck officiating. The family requests contributions to Congregation Ohev Shalom, 613 Concourse Parkway So, Maitland 32751, in memory of Dr. Marvin M. Nathan. Arrangements entrusted to Beth Shalom Memorial Chapel, Orlando.
