  • Just imagine what 5776 can be-full 'STEAM' ahead!

    Sep 11, 2015

On Rosh Hashanah, we celebrate Creation. We recognize that a higher power in the universe created the world "ex nihilo," or "out of nothing." It is a time we can step back and say in the words of the Psalmist "Ma Rabu Ma'asecha," or "how magnificent is Your work and Your creation." From time immemorial, human beings have had that similar innate desire to create, to imagine, and to innovate. Humankind has created beautiful works of art, magnificent temples and cathedrals, and remarkable cities.... Full story

  • Save a fridge magnet for must-have Jewish calendar

    Edmon J. Rodman, JTA|Sep 11, 2015

LOS ANGELES (JTA)-It's no miracle that I know the exact minute that Rosh Hashanah is coming; my trusty Jewish calendar hanging on the refrigerator tells me. While it doesn't actually speak to me like my friend Marcy's Jewish calendar computer program, my old-fashioned paper version not only provides me the eve of when Rosh Hashanah begins, Sept. 13, and the precise moment, 6:44 p.m., but a lesson in klal Yisrael, literally "the whole of Israel." And it's all for free. Unlike the mezuzah, there... Full story

  • Pomegranate and honey-glazed chicken

    Liz Rueven|Sep 11, 2015

(The Nosher via JTA)-Pomegranates, or rimonim in Hebrew, are one of the most recognizable and highly symbolic fruits in Jewish culture. Originating in Persia, these reddish, thick-skinned fruits (technically a berry) begin to appear in markets at the end of summer and are readily available for holiday cooking by Rosh Hashanah. According to Gil Marks in "The Encyclopedia of Jewish Food," the abundance of seeds, nestled into a white membrane and encased in a protective and leathery skin, is associ... Full story

  • Use a slow cooker for Rosh Hashanah meals

    Sep 11, 2015

Laura Frankel, auther of “Jewish Slow Cooker Recipes,” suggests this Veal Ragout as the main course after services on the High Holidays. Each fall, when the first cold snap hits, I start looking for hearty dishes with big flavor like this homey bit of French peasant artistry, named with the French term ragouter, or “revive the taste.” The delicate veal is complemented by the flavorful herbs and cipollini onions. Recipes like this are perfect for the slow cooker—all the way through early spring. The longer the ingredients “hang out” together, th... Full story

  • Apple and Honey Pie Pops

    Sheri Silver|Sep 11, 2015

(The Nosher via JTA)—Like most Jewish holidays, Rosh Hashanah brings to mind certain traditional food customs, the most well-known being the dipping of apples in honey. And while a classic apple pie or cake is a lovely way to mark our hopes for a sweet new year, I thought it would be fun to change things up a bit. These apple and honey pie “pops” are a cinch to make—and even more fun to eat. They can be assembled (and frozen) in advance, and are especially nice to serve for a crowd. No cutting or forks needed! Even better, you only need a... Full story

    Mark Mietkiewicz|Sep 11, 2015

Before I get going with today’s column, I would like to wish all my readers a good and healthy CUCUMBER in which you are inscribed in the PICKLE of Life. What the--?? Rosh Hashanah is almost here—a time for solemn introspection. But that doesn’t mean you and your family can’t have some fun through holiday-related online games, puzzles and activities that will last you until Yom Kippur. Like the Torah Tots site where you can print out and then decorate holiday symbols such as the shofar and tashlich. There’s also an on-line jigsaw puzzle in... Full story

  • Why Shemini Atzeret is the pinnacle of the High Holidays season

    Sarah Chandler|Sep 11, 2015

NEW YORK (JTA)—You might not know it, but Shemini Atzeret is the pinnacle of the High Holidays season. Not Rosh Hashanah, when our fates for the year are traditionally written, nor Yom Kippur, when they are sealed. Shemini Atzeret, the oft-forgotten coda that comes at the end of the Sukkot festival, trumps them all. That’s not just my opinion. The rabbis and ancient Israelites knew it, too. According to the agrarian roots of the Jewish calendar, the date of Shemini Atzeret is timed to the start of the rainy season in Israel. In the holiday’s mu... Full story

  • Wearing my kippah in Italy-and feeling fine

    Ben Sales|Aug 28, 2015

(JTA)-During my four months studying in Italy in the fall of 2007, you could say I had more than my fair share of strange Jewish experiences. Running late for a train one morning in Florence, I decided the best course of action would be to lay tefillin in the janitor's closet at the station, only to have a policeman threaten to arrest me for trespassing. Lost in Rome one Friday afternoon, a Smart car pulled up alongside me, a 17-year-old leaned out the window and, in Hebrew, invited me to jump i... Full story

    Aug 28, 2015

From the Jewish Slow Cooker Recipes book by Laura Frankel Rubbed Brisket Makes 10 servings Brisket is so traditional—how can you improve upon it? My friend Julia makes brisket rubbed with spices, wrapped in foil, and slowly cooked in the oven. She swears that the spice-infused meat stays plump and juicy and keeps its hearty texture. Inspired by her technique, I decided to adapt her method for the slow cooker. Boy, was she right! The fat melts into the meat and drips off. The bed of vegetables keeps the meat from sitting in the fat, and the f... Full story

Pro Challenge race at nearly 11,000 feet of elevation in the Colorado Rockies, he thrust his water bottle into the hand of a young spectator clutching an Israeli flag. • Hasidic village makes parents choose: Smartphone or children's education

    Brian Schaefer, JTA|Aug 21, 2015

(JTA)—Most schools forbid the use of cellphones by students during class, but in the Hasidic Jewish village of Kiryas Joel, New York, it’s the parents who are being required to power down. At the end of July, a notice was sent to families in the haredi Orthodox community about 50 miles northwest of New York City detailing strict parental prohibitions on smartphone use as a prerequisite for their children’s enrollment at the local yeshiva. “Make sure to put your devices in order and send in the filled out rules form for both parents (enclos... Full story
