The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center is kicking off its fall cultural season with a new exhibit titled Two Regimes. The exhibit features the work of two women: Teodora Verbitskya, who chronicled her experiences in Russia in the first half of the 20th Century, and her daughter Nadia Werbitzky, a professional artist who translated her mother's writings into striking pieces of art. On Nov. 20, 2016, three Conservative congregations will hold an event to honor individuals from each of their participating synagogues for outstanding leadership within their synagogue and their community. On Wednesday, Sept. 7, Chabad of North Orlando kicked off its local CTeen chapter for the coming school year. CTeen is a worldwide club aimed at engaging Jewish teenagers in Jewish practice and identity. While most people prepare for the Jewish holidays a week in advance, the Jewish Pavilion staff begin their preparations several months in advance. Pictured are 50 challahs and honey cakes, service booklets and High Holiday paper goods to share with over 500 seniors in long- term care. Each Jewish Pavilion program director has a territory (north, south, east and west Greater Orlando) and interacts with activities directors in 15-20 senior communities in that territory. In response to the Pulse nightclub massacre, Temple Israel organized a campaign to raise funds for the One Orlando Fund through the sale of T-shirts. The unique design, created by Emily Raij, incorporated remembrance of the 49 victims in a tree-of-life with Jewish symbols and a rainbow. But just contributing money was not enough. The first in the series of 10 monthly JGSGO (Jewish Genealogical Society) workshops held at The Roth Family JCC on, Sept. 6, was an overwhelming success with over 50 in attendance in person and online. HaZamir Orlando, the international Jewish High School choir, held a successful Open House last week, launching their inaugural 2016-17 season. Teens from all over the surrounding Orlando area and their parents attended an informational open house that ended with the group singing in beautiful four-part harmony as a group for the first time. Dr. Harry Rein escaped from the Nazis on the final train existing Austria after Hitler's annexation. He was a refugee for many years and with good fortune landed in the U.S. Rein firmly believes he has encountered angels both seen and unseen along the way who encourage him to reach higher and help him and his family in inexplicable ways. It's smiles all around, as seniors at Siena Memory Care enjoy both human and canine visitors. Part of "Licks and Hugs," this Jewish Pavilion program brings select dogs to seniors for occasional visitation. Last Friday, Jewish Academy of Orlando welcomed its families for the first Shabbat of the year. Head of School, Alan Rusonik, led a shehecheyanu to celebrate the school's new year and new beginnings. On Sunday, Sept. 18, children of all ages will get the unique opportunity to participate in a hands-on workshop, crafting their own Shofars, or ram’s horn, for the upcoming holiday of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
