More than 65 children, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents enjoyed a Sept. 23 multigenerational Shabbat Picnic in the Park in Baldwin Park sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando's PJ Library/Shalom Families program. They started out as volunteers, and some strangers to each other, but they had one common passion-mahjong. And now they have yet another love in common, their dear friend Ruth Elson. Five Jewish mothers from Orlando participated in the Jewish Women's Renaissance Project (JWRP) Leadership Conference in College Park, Md. The JWRP Leadership Conference, held in collaboration with Israel's Ministry of Diaspora Affairs, gathered Jewish women from across the world to hone their leadership skills and create a global Jewish women's movement. With the coming of Rosh Hashanah, Jews around the world will celebrate the new year of 5777. According to the Jewish calendar, the world’s oldest calendar still in use today, the year 5777 will begin on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 2. Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish High Holiday period, is a two-day celebration and includes the customs of sounding the “shofar” (a hollowed-out ram’s horn) and the eating of symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey to evoke a “sweet new year.” The High Holidays end with Yom Kippur 10 days later.... The Roth Family Jewish Community Center of Greater Orlando has announced the dates of its 18th Annual Central Florida Jewish Film Festival, held in conjunction with the Enzian Theater—Nov. 12-14. The festival’s committee, chaired by Harriet Weiss and Risa Tetenbaum, have screened over 65 films.
