Scouts from the Central Florida Council area took part in the annual Scout Shabbat. The event was co-hosted by Troop 641/Children of Abraham Foundation and Temple Israel in Winter Springs. The Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando's Our Jewish Orlando (OJO) held its first-ever Shabbat Potluck on Feb. 12 at the home of Aleah Mathews. On Saturday night, Feb. 13, Temple Israel held a Havdalah service in honor of the members' four-legged friends. Under Jewish law, animals have some of the same rights as humans do. They rest on Shabbat; they are forbidden to be muzzled to prevent them from eating while working in the field, just like human workers who must be allowed to eat from the produce of their labor. The Jewish community of Greater Orlando is gearing up for a big milestone celebration. In collaboration with the Orange County Regional History Center and the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, the Orlando Jewish community is planning an exhibit celebrating the 100th anniversary of the organized Jewish community. The children of Congregation Sinai Religious School celebrated the New Year of the Trees, Tu B' Shevat, with a special seder on Sunday Jan. 24 during their class studies. Tu B' Shevat which always falls on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Shevat celebrates the measuring of the aging of the trees for tithing. On Wednesday, Feb. 10, the fourth grade students at the Jewish Academy of Orlando spent the day in St. Augustine as a culmination of their Florida History unit. The students met at the school at 6:30 in the morning for the almost two-hour bus ride. When they arrived in St. Augustine, they went on tour of the fortress, lighthouse, and many other famous and historical sites.
