    On Jan. 15, as a part of the Jewish Community Relations Council’s Response to Hunger campaign, there will be a volunteer opportunity for the Jewish community to come together and volunteer their time at the food bank. An estimated 8,000 seniors go hungry every day in Central Florida. One in five of our Central Florida neighbors need food assistance. Second Harvest helps 70,000 meals arrive on the tables of low-income seniors, families and children in our area, each day.     The Flagler-Volusia County of the Jewish War Veterans will hold their first regular breakfast meeting of 2014 at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 12 at the Aberdeen Club House, 55 Allwood Drive, Ormond Beach.     After careful deliberations, the Orlando Chapter of Hadassah chose five members to be honored at its annual Awards Brunch on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Hilton Hotel in Altamonte Springs. These five members are Joan Schwebel, Rita and George Slotnik, Marcia Wasserman, and Rita Weissmann. Joan Schwebel, Ph.D., is one of the recipients of the Myrtle Wreath Award.   • CTeens of Central Florida join for winter vacation trip

    Jewish teens from across Central Florida joined for the Chabad Teen Network trip during the winter break vacation. The CTeens had a wonderful time ice skating at the RDV and then drove to South Orlando to the Kosher Gourmet Restaurant where they were treated to a wonderful Israeli-style dinner.   • Learn CPR-you may save a life

    The Orlando Chapter of Hadassah will present Saving Heartbeats at its luncheon meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Congregation Ohev Shalom at 11:30 a.m. The meeting is open to all who are interested in attending.   • Chabad at UCF: Aepi, ZBT and Aephi join together in Chanukah celebration and toy drive

    On Monday, Dec. 2nd, Chabad at UCF paired with Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Epsilon Pi, and Zeta Beta Tau for a Grand Menorah lighting and toy drive. The toy drive benefitted Jewish Adoptions and Foster Care Options (JAFCO), an organization providing services to abused and neglected children in Florida. More than 200 students attended the event that took place at Light Up UCF outside the CFE Arena.     Like all Jewish families, candle lighting and gift exchange was added to the evening routine for the eight nights of Chanukah. For the Colley, Keimach, Yoffee and Shapiro families the seventh night was set aside for the residents at Chambrel Island Lake.     The St. Augustine Jewish Historical Society has been awarded a Florida Humanities Council Grant in support of a two-day commemoration marking the 50th anniversary of the largest mass arrest of rabbis in United States history.
