Many thanks to volunteers, Judy Suberman and Susie and Mark Stone, for leading the prayers and songs of the holidays. Christine DeSouza, news editor at the Heritage Florida Jewish News, was awarded first place in the Arts, Entertainment & Review Reporting category of the 2015 Florida Press Association's Better Weekly Newspaper Contest. There are more than 2,000 homeless families and individuals in the city of Gainesville, and just a few short weeks ago, UF Hillel in collaboration with Jewish Student Union, celebrated the Jewish holiday of Sukkot by making bagged meals to help feed the hungry and the homeless at Gainesville's local shelter, St. Francis House. Last Sunday, more than 400 people came to Crane's Roost in Altamonte Springs to enjoy the wonderful weather, nosh on knishes, and hear time-tested Beatles' songs by The British Invasion and the Jewish Academy of Orlando's choir. With the recent passage by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) of the controversial resolutions that deny Jewish and Christian ties to the Temple Mount, and the city of Jerusalem (calling it a Muslim city), it is extremely important that Central Floridian Jews and Christians show their unity for Israel. The Roth Family JCC's annual Jewish Film Festival, presented in partnership with the Enzian Theater, is showing five films and one short Nov. 12 through Nov. 14. Professor Moshe Pelli, former director of the UCF Judaic Studies, and Abe and Tess Wise Endowed Professor of Judaic Studies, has just published his new book by the Hebrew University's Magnes Press in Jerusalem. The book is titled Kochvei Yitzhak, The Journal of the Haskalah in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1845–1873). Celebrate Shabbat with the synagogue that feels like family. Shabbat evening service led by Rabbi Karen Allen is on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. The service will include special readings commemorating Veteran’s Day and Kristallnacht. The 3rd-5th grade students at the Jewish Academy of Orlando walked to Lake Lily the week between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to participate in its annual Tashlich service. At Tashlich, the students symbolically threw away their misdeeds to begin the New Year renewed. Head of School Alan Rusonik led the Tashlich service.
