They started out as volunteers, and some strangers to each other, but they had one common passion-mahjong. And now they have yet another love in common, their dear friend Ruth Elson. Just last month, Josh Zeffren, a seventh grader from Congregation Ohev Shalom, approached The Jewish Pavilion regarding meeting with a senior regularly and exploring his or her Jewish history. Five Jewish mothers from Orlando participated in the Jewish Women's Renaissance Project (JWRP) Leadership Conference in College Park, Md. The JWRP Leadership Conference, held in collaboration with Israel's Ministry of Diaspora Affairs, gathered Jewish women from across the world to hone their leadership skills and create a global Jewish women's movement. With the coming of Rosh Hashanah, Jews around the world will celebrate the new year of 5777. According to the Jewish calendar, the world’s oldest calendar still in use today, the year 5777 will begin on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 2. Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish High Holiday period, is a two-day celebration and includes the customs of sounding the “shofar” (a hollowed-out ram’s horn) and the eating of symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey to evoke a “sweet new year.” The High Holidays end with Yom Kippur 10 days later.... The Roth Family Jewish Community Center of Greater Orlando has announced the dates of its 18th Annual Central Florida Jewish Film Festival, held in conjunction with the Enzian Theater—Nov. 12-14. The festival’s committee, chaired by Harriet Weiss and Risa Tetenbaum, have screened over 65 films. Temple Israel will celebrate all three with “Dinner Under the Stars” in their sukkah on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. This event is open to the community and takes place on a religious school day. When The Jewish Pavilion raised funds for the elder-care community with "A Walk in the Park" and then "A Taste in the Park," Pavilion annual member and volunteer, Dolores Indek, was right there, showing her support by purchasing memorial signage to honor a loved one. JFS Orlando recently received a $30,550 grant from the annual Community Investment Grant Round at Central Florida Foundation. The grant will be used to establish a computer lab to be used by JFS Orlando clients and assist in agency technology upgrades. Theater at the J is presenting the rock-and-roll hit musical "Bye, Bye Birdie" on Thursday Sept. 29. As a lead up to the opening, producing director Kerry Giese wanted to do something different-and gutsy-to promote the play.
